Maintaining Your RV Tires

The tires on your RV keep you on the road. If they are not properly maintained, an unexpected blow out or loss of traction could cause you to lose control of the vehicle. Visiting a local Texas RV dealer for regular replacement is the best way to stay on schedule when traveling. Performing routine maintenance and checks between sets of new tires will ensure you catch problems before they put your vehicle at risk.

Balance Your Load

Keeping your furnishings and other cargo evenly distributed over the entire motor home prevents unusual wear on one side. When tires wear quickly on just one side, the vehicle will pull to that side and makes steering difficult. Always respect the posted weight limits for your recreational vehicle as well. If you are not sure how much weight you are carrying, visit a weighing station and check.

Keep An Eye On Pressure

Proper tire pressure increases gas mileage, provides correct grip on the road and prevents damage to the rims. Check your tire pressure each morning if you are on the road. Measure it again before departing from a campground and before and after storing it for any time, even as short as a month.

Prepare Your Tires

The right cleaning and protection routine will help your RV tires last for years instead of just one season if you store it during the winter. Clean the tires with soap and water before storing to prevent salts or minerals from damaging the rubber. Cover them so UV rays from sunlight can’t cause cracking, and unload the RV to reduce weight. Blocks or moving the vehicle every three months prevent the development of flat spots.

Check The Age

Tires degrade with age no matter how well they are stored. If you purchase used RVs for sale, have the tires inspected and ask for the technician to read the manufacturing year from the DOT number stamped onto them. Tires over 3 years in age should probably be replaced before you take your new RV out for a trip.

CCRV can help you maintain your tires and replace them when the time comes. Our service team is backed by one of the largest parts warehouses found at an RV dealer. We can match any RV with the perfect set of tires. If you need more space, check out our extensive used and new RV inventory as well.

Road trip around Texas – Ghost Towns

Visiting ghost towns in Texas would be a great way to spend a vacation in your recreational vehicle. After you pick up your new RV or have it serviced at a Texas RV dealer, map out a route to visit some of the many ghost towns in Texas.

http://i1.rvusa.com/wm/showimagerv.ashx?id=5813961&t=5

Visit the ghost towns of Texas in your new RV.

Pennington: Pennington, located about 12 miles north west of Groveton on the Houston/Trinity county line on Highway 287 was originally called Tyler’s Prairie. The community set itself up in 1835. The town land was purchased by A. F. Westall and Daniel Daily in 1855. In 1959, Daily bought out his partner. In 1860, a Baptist church was built. It was originally called Salem, but was later changed to the Pennington Baptist Church. In 1866, Daily platted the site and named it Pennington.

A school was built in 1866. The school changed its name to Steele Academy, but closed in 1882. In 1873, Pennington finally got a post office and was named the Trinity County seat. In the 1870s, there were between 1,000 and 1,500 residents. The population dropped to less than 300 by 1904. As of 2000, there were only 67 people in the town.

Buckner: Buckner was around in the early 1840s. A man from Arkansas, John McGarrah, owned 649 acres there. He owned a trading post. After people started settling in the area, he donated 50 acres for a town site. Buckner is located about three miles north of McKinney.

In 1846, Collin County was established. On July 4, 1846, McGarrah’s town site was selected for the county seat, but the committee did not pick an alternative. Since the new town did not follow the law, as it gave the voters no other place to vote, the 1848 election declared that McKinney would be the legal seat. Within a year, Buckner was deserted. It is one of Texas’ earliest ghost towns.

Other ghost towns you may want to visit include Snow Town, just east of Lake Livingston. The town never had many people, and still remains sparsely populated as it did when it was first settled. At one time, it had five stores, a barber shop and a pool hall. When the owners died, so did the businesses — and the town.

Pyote is another ghost town, this one located seven miles west of Wickett at the intersections of I-20, Highway 80, Highway 115 and FM 2355. In 2000, its population was 131. Population was 348 in 1990. This town was originally called Pyote Tank. The area was originally settled in 1881, and had a telegraph office. The 7S ranch was located there, established in 1995. The town finally got a post office in 1907. It had a school. In 1925, there were only 100 people living there, but in 1928, the population jumped to 3,500. By 1931, the population dropped to 1,097.

Several hobbies you can easily do while RVing include knitting, photography, painting, sketching, bird watching, antiquing, journal writing, and blogging. Whether you are an expert photographer or a novice just starting out, the abundance of subjects you will have at your disposal while traveling in your travel trailer are endless. Use a digital camera, disposable camera or your phone to snap some flicks to download on your social network page and share with others.

Amateurs to expert artists have the scenery along the highways and byways to inspire creative work whether you choose pastels, oils, charcoal, or pen and pencil. This is a good opportunity to incorporate photography into your hobby plans and take pictures of the many species.

Estate sales, yard sales, antique auctions all are interesting hobbies that can produce interesting results if you know the value of the available items. RVing is a great way to travel to many out of the way locations filled with vintage antiques.

Pets and Rving

RVing is great fun for the entire family including our four-legged friends. Whether it is a dog, cat, or a feathered friend, traveling with our extended pet-family is an adventure. At your Corpus Christi RV dealer, let the experienced staff show you around with everything from new Coachmen travel trailers and luxury fifth wheels to quality used trailers for sale. If you’re in need of information about motor homes, and ones that will be comfortable for your pets, too, CCRV has the answers.

Tips for Traveling with Pets

Pets are not necessarily natural travelers. It helps to subject your pet to road travel prior to taking an extended trip with short drives around town to get used to the movement of the vehicle. It also alerts you to any problems your pet may have with motion sickness. Let your pet explore the RV and put their blanket, bed, or pillow inside so they can associate the RV with home.

There are several things at the top of the list to keep in mind when traveling with pets. These include entertainment, exercise, food and water, clean up, and safety. Keep your pets entertained by taking along their favorite toys, blanket, rug, or catnip to keep them relaxed.

Carry extra food and water for your pet in case of emergencies. If they are on medication, have an ample supply before leaving home. Keep a copy of your pet’s medical history and veterinarian information with you in case your pet needs medical attention while traveling.

Exercise is important. Take advantage of stops along the way to secure your pooch and let him stretch his legs. Cats can also be walked as long as they have been trained ahead of time and are kept secure using a cat harness. At these stops, let the dog take care of business and set up a portable/disposable litter pan for kitty.

While traveling with your pet, keep them inside their crate, travel pet carrier, or secured with a pet harness. You never know what can happen while traveling and it is best to keep your pets secure and safe inside the RV. Never leave your pet alone inside a closed up RV or alone outside the RV.

Know the rules and regulations for any RV campground where you plan to stay. Each will have its own policies regarding pets within the campground. Be sure to follow the rules to keep you and your pets safe.

Tell us about your pets that you take with you on your Texas RV trips!

Keeping Cool in Your RV This Summer

When you purchase a new RV from a Texas RV dealer, it usually has air conditioning. If you buy one of the used RVs for sale, it may or may not have air conditioning, depending on the type of RV and the age. If an RV has air conditioning, it’s a simple matter of keeping cool, as long as you have a generator or power hookup at a campsite. It’s when you don’t have a generator or power hookup that you might run into problems keeping cool.

If you have an air conditioning unit, you can use a generator to operate it, even if the RV doesn’t come with a generator. Locate the wattage and amps for your air conditioning unit. If you can’t find a label on the unit or don’t have an owner’s manual, a Texas RV dealer that offers service and parts should be able to help you.

Cooking outside, whether you have an outdoor kitchen or are using a barbecue grill will also help keep the RV cooler.

You can purchase a portable generator — some even come on wheels. Make sure the running wattage of the generator is higher than the wattage required to turn the air compressor on. If you don’t, when the compressor cycles, it will bog down the generator or shut it off completely. You could also risk an electrical fire if the compressor overheats.

When you set up camp, you should have a cover for the generator — it cannot be a tight cover, so use a cover that is at least a foot wider, deeper and taller than the generator, and make sure it has air vents.

If you don’t have an air conditioning unit, you can use fans, as long as you have the RV hooked up to power. Also, opening all the windows and roof vents helps air circulate and not become stagnant. With a small wind, the RV will be cooler than it is outside.

Alternatively, you can purchase portable air conditioners. If you don’t have anything except battery power, a cooler air conditioner will cool a smaller RV. The unit sits on top of a cooler filled with ice and works off battery power. You could also purchase a converter to use regular power.

If you have any questions on how to keep your RV cool, or need to upgrade your unit, make sure to give CCRV a call!
